Love with Courage

Isn’t the central human task to learn to love? And to love courageously? The kind of love that fosters growth and wholeness, heals disconnection, and guides us to collectively attend to brokenness in the world?

The greatest virtue too often lacking in my life and others’ is courage,
Courage to face pain and sorrow for what is broken in our lives and the world
Courage to share with others what genuinely breaks our hearts
Courage to face the depths of the challenges of our time
Courage to live with the humility and honesty that generates genuine connection
Courage to stand and walk with others for meaningful change

What breaks your heart? What causes you to grieve deeply?  When we keep that to ourselves, we remain disconnected. We cannot grow or participate in the healing of our selves or our world—unless we open up to others.

I’m struck how many people who so value love and compassion remain largely isolated from others who share similar commitments. Creating real connections or real community takes a commitment to honesty discern about who we are and what we value. It takes a commitment to reach out to others and discover shared commitments.

Love with Courage aims to:
– share my reflections as a fellow sojourner learning to love with courage
– encourage us all to live with greater power, joy, and vision
– bring people who are similarly heartbroken to stand together
– offer specific ways to act on our hope and sorrow
– and, most simply, to make connections for meaningful change

When we learn to “love with courage” we make room for the joy and energy of real connection. Possibilities emerge, and we ordinary human beings are capable of bringing forth the extraordinary.

It is time for people of compassion, regardless of faith, to join together!

Sermon from April 8, 2021 My favorite week of spring is when the magnolia trees begin to flower, the daffodils explode into bursts of yellow, and other spring flowers and blossoms dot the landscape. For these are signs of rebirth and new beginnings. As we move deeper into this season of renewal, I invite you…

  • The Wisdom of Sacrifice

Over the last two weeks, I’ve heard lots of deep concern and appreciation for the medical personnel who are on the frontline confronting the Covid-19 epidemic, risking exposure and literally putting their own health—and that of their family’s—at risk. I’ve also had conversations with physicians about it, and I’m truly inspired by them. The three…
